- Boiling

These are granules of the activated charcoal and are used today by every water filter manufacturer in their filter system for eliminating the smell and giving taste to water. It is also used before the purification for making the water suitable for treatment. - Reverse Osmosis
One of the best methods for filtration discovered yet, reverse osmosis applies the theory of osmotic pressure to eliminate larger impure molecules in the permeable membrane and has been proven to be the most effective form of purification yet. - Distillation
This is the process of getting fresh water by boiling the seawater and cooling down the vapor. As much as useful this is, it requires a lot of energy and hence is not used on a mass production basis. - UV Water Filter
This filter is again effective for killing microorganisms. A chamber of water is exposed to UV rays which essentially kills them. However, if the energy dose is not enough, the genetic structure of the organism might change but their biological process will not be disrupted. - Solar Distillation
This is a good filtration system for people stranded on a lifeboat and is present in every one. It uses the method of distillation but however uses the solar power of the sun to heat because of unavailability of other resources. This makes is good for emergency situations but not effective on a regular basis.’
